Can You Get Sunburned Through a Window?
An ordinary closed window blocks most of the UVB that causes sunburn, so burning is much less likely than outdoors. But some UVA can pass through, and no visible burn does not mean no UV exposure.
Why glass changes the answer
Sunlight contains different UV wavelengths. Ordinary glass filters UVB much more effectively than UVA. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that UVA can penetrate windows and contributes to skin ageing and skin cancer risk.
That distinction matters when you ask whether a sunny seat is protected. The absence of the usual outdoor burn response is not a measurement of everything passing through the pane.
Not every window is the same
Glass type, coatings, films and construction all affect what gets through. A house window, a vehicle windscreen and a vehicle side window may offer different protection. You cannot reliably tell the UV performance from how bright or dark the view looks.
For a particular product, look for the manufacturer's tested UV-blocking specification. Ask whether it covers UVA as well as UVB and whether the figure applies to the finished window or an added film. Avoid assuming every tinted pane provides the same result.
A sunny desk and a long drive
If you sit in direct sun beside a window for long stretches, move the chair out of the beam or use a blind. For repeated journeys, think about the arm and side of your face nearest the glass. Covering exposed skin is an easy option when shade is awkward.
You do not need to treat every brief moment near a window as a separate emergency. Look at the repeated exposure in your routine and make the comfortable seat or route easier to use with protection.
Can the forecast tell you the UV indoors?
No. Our hourly chart is an outdoor forecast for the selected coordinates. It does not know your glazing, seat position or how much direct sunlight enters the room. Do not multiply the outdoor value by a guessed window percentage.
The UV index is weighted toward sunburn, so a low outdoor reading is also not a complete description of UVA passing through glass. For the underlying scale, see what the UV index measures.
What about an open window?
An open window has no pane across the opening to filter direct sunlight. If the sun reaches your skin through that gap, plan for outdoor exposure. The same applies to an open car window or roof.
Common questions
Can you tan through glass?
It is possible because UVA can get through some glazing. A change in colour is not evidence of safe exposure. See why UV index is not a tanning timer.
Does sunscreen help by a window?
Broad-spectrum sunscreen is designed to protect against UVA and UVB. Use it with covering or shade if your routine involves prolonged direct sunlight, and follow any personal advice from your dermatologist.
Does a cool room remove the risk?
No. Air conditioning changes comfort, not the UV transmission of the glass. Choose protection based on the exposure rather than the room temperature.
