When is UV strongest during the day?
UV is strongest when the sun is highest in the sky, which is around midday by the sun, not by the thermometer. Knowing the shape of the day’s UV curve helps you plan when to be exposed and when to seek shade.
UV peaks at solar noon
Solar noon is when the sun is at its highest point. UV follows the sun’s height, so it climbs through the morning, peaks around solar noon and falls through the afternoon. The result is a bell-shaped curve. It’s the same curve you see on our UV forecast chart for any place.
Solar noon isn’t the same as 12:00 on your watch. Where you sit in your time zone shifts it, and daylight saving time pushes it later by an hour. In summer, solar noon often lands closer to 1 pm on the clock.
UV and heat don’t peak together
The hottest part of the day is usually mid-to-late afternoon, because the ground keeps warming after the sun passes its highest point. UV peaks earlier. At 10 am it can already be strong while the air still feels cool, and at 4 pm it can be hot while UV is dropping. If you go by how warm it feels, you’ll be caught out in the morning.
The 10 to 4 rule of thumb
A widely used rule is to limit time in the sun between about 10 am and 4 pm. The EPA’s UV index guidance puts it as seeking shade from late morning through mid-afternoon, when most of the day’s UV arrives. It’s a handy default, but the real window changes with the season and where you are. In summer at mid-latitudes, the index can be 3 or higher for most of the day. In winter it may stay below 3 all day, except at altitude or on snow. The chart on our home page shows your actual window.
The shadow rule of thumb
A quick check without a forecast: the EPA suggests that if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is high and UV is strong, so seek shade and cover up. If your shadow is longer than you, the sun is lower and UV is weaker. It isn’t precise, and it doesn’t account for altitude, snow or clouds, but it’s a useful reminder.
How the curve changes with the seasons
- Summer: a higher sun, a taller curve and a wider window with UV of 3 or more.
- Winter: a lower sun, a flatter and shorter curve. At high latitudes the index may stay below 3 for the whole day.
- Spring and autumn: in between, and easy to underestimate because it’s cooler.
- Near the equator: high UV year-round with a sharp midday peak, because the sun is close to overhead.
- High latitudes in summer: long days, so a long stretch of moderate UV.
How to time a hike around UV
- Start early. You’ll beat the heat and much of the peak UV. In mountains you’ll also often beat afternoon storms.
- Save exposed terrain for the ends of the day. Ridgelines, open scree and terrain above the treeline give no shade.
- Plan a shady midday break. Lunch under trees or a rock overhang cuts your exposure at the peak.
- Keep protection on all day. Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours, including on the descent.
- Watch the return leg. A late start means your climb back is in the afternoon sun, when UV is still high.
A worked example
Say the chart for your trailhead shows UV above 3 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a peak of 7 around 1 pm. A good plan: start at 7 am, do the exposed climb before 10:30, eat lunch in the trees between 12 and 2, and finish the open ridge after 4 pm. You keep sun protection on throughout, but you spend the strongest hours in the shade.
Reading the chart: three things to check
- The protection window. The bracket at the top of the chart marks the hours when the UV index is 3 or higher, the level at which the WHO recommends sun protection.
- The peak. The peak number and time tell you when to be in shade or covered. A peak of 8 or more means planning the day around it.
- The “now” marker. It shows where you are on the curve. If it sits on the rising side, UV is about to climb. On the falling side, you still need protection until the curve drops below 3.
Clock time versus sun time
Because solar noon depends on where you are in your time zone and on daylight saving time, the peak doesn’t sit at the same clock time everywhere. In summer in the north-eastern United States, for example, the peak is usually close to 1 pm on the clock. In midwinter it’s much nearer to noon. The chart uses local clock time for the place you pick, so you can plan straight from it.
Sunrise and sunset hikes
UV is low right after sunrise and before sunset, which is why those hours feel gentler. But the window with UV of 3 or more can start surprisingly early in summer and finish surprisingly late. If you’re hiking to catch the sunrise, you’re fine at first, but plan to be covered up by mid-morning. On the way down, the sun will already be high.
Multi-day trips
On a multi-day trek the pattern repeats: pack up and move early, take a long shaded break in the middle of the day, and make camp before evening. Check each day’s chart in the morning, because cloud can change the peak from day to day. Our forecast shows the next few days, side by side, on the same scale so you can compare them.
Frequently asked questions
Is UV stronger in the morning or afternoon?
It is roughly symmetrical around solar noon, so the same distance before and after noon gives similar UV. Clock time can mislead, because solar noon is often after 12:00.
Can I burn early in the morning or late in the day?
UV is lower then, but the index is often still 3 or higher during the shoulders of the day in summer. Check the hourly chart for your place.
Does UV stop at sunset?
UV falls quickly as the sun gets low and reaches near zero after sunset. Twilight adds very little.
