About Punta Cana

Punta Cana sits on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic at about 18° north, one of the most visited beach destinations in the Caribbean. Long stretches of open sand and calm, shallow water mean most of a typical day here happens with no overhead shade at all.

Sand, water and your real UV

The chart above shows UV from the sky. Bright sand reflects roughly 15% to 20% of that back up, and calm water adds more, especially in the morning and late afternoon when the sun sits at a lower angle. That combination is why people burn on the backs of their legs and under their chin even in the shade of a beach umbrella.

When UV is strongest here

Punta Cana runs high to extreme UV essentially year-round given its tropical latitude. The driest, clearest stretch is typically December through April; the wetter summer months bring more cloud but also more humidity and afternoon storms that can build quickly.

On the beach and water

Catamaran trips, snorkeling excursions and time in the resort pool all keep you in open sun for hours with no natural break. A steady ocean breeze cools you down without cutting the UV, which is part of why it’s easy to underestimate exposure here.

Sun protection tips for Punta Cana

  • Reapply water-resistant SPF 30+ every two hours and immediately after swimming or toweling off.
  • Wear a UPF rash guard on boat excursions, where shade is limited and the sea adds reflected UV.
  • Time pool or beach lounging for morning or late afternoon and move indoors or under real shade at midday.
  • Don’t skip lips, ears and the part in your hair — easy spots to miss with sunscreen.
