What to do today
About Santorini
Santorini sits in the Aegean Sea at about 36° north. Its whitewashed towns of Fira and Oia and the volcanic caldera draw visitors for long days of walking, boat trips and beach time, most of it with little natural shade.
Whitewash, water and your real UV
The forecast above measures UV from the sky. Santorini’s bright white buildings and pale stone streets reflect noticeably more UV than ordinary pavement, and the sea adds further reflection on catamaran and sunset-cruise trips. The combination makes shaded cafĂ© tables and narrow alleyways feel deceptively cooler than the UV dose you’re actually getting.
When UV is strongest here
UV peaks from June through August, when the Aegean sun is high and skies are reliably clear. Spring and early autumn still reach moderate to high levels on sunny days, especially at midday on open clifftop paths.
On caldera walks and boat trips
The cliffside walk between Fira and Oia has almost no shade, and popular red and black sand beaches sit under direct sun most of the day. Catamaran tours around the caldera add hours of open-water exposure.
Sun protection tips for Santorini
- Walk the Fira-to-Oia caldera path early morning or late afternoon, both for cooler temperatures and lower UV.
- Reapply sunscreen after time in whitewashed alleys — the glare undersells how much UV you’re getting.
- Bring a cover-up and wide-brim hat for catamaran and sunset-cruise excursions.
- Wear sunglasses with UV protection; the white buildings and pale stone add significant glare.
