About Pompeii

Pompeii is an archaeological city, not a single building to enter and leave. A visit can stretch across streets, courtyards and open ruins, with stops that add up as you explore.

The chart is a forecast for the archaeological park area. It does not distinguish a roofed room from an open street or promise that a particular building will be accessible.

A long walk between stops

Some parts of the visit offer shelter, while others put you back outside. Plan for the route between sights, not only the places where you stop to look.

The park's visitor rules describe irregular paving and changes in level. Give yourself time for the walk; trying to hurry through exposed sections is not a substitute for bringing sun protection.

Choose a manageable part of the day

Use the hourly curve to compare the expected UV during your full visit. An early start may put the first streets below the day's peak, while the return to the exit can happen at a higher reading.

Temperature and UV are different measures. A mild day can still call for protection, and cloudy weather is a reason to check the forecast rather than assume the sun is weak.

Sun protection tips for Pompeii

  • Carry a hat and sunglasses as well as comfortable footwear for the archaeological paths.
  • Keep sunscreen within reach and follow its label during a longer visit.
  • Use the official park information for current routes and access. Breaks out of direct sun are easier to plan when you know which areas you intend to visit.
