About the Statue of Liberty

A trip to the Statue of Liberty includes more than time at the monument. Getting to Liberty Island means security screening, ferry travel and time walking or waiting outdoors along the way.

The chart is a forecast for Liberty Island. Nearby harbor stops may share similar conditions, but it is not a separate reading for an enclosed ferry cabin or a shaded part of the island.

Include the journey across the harbor

A breeze on the water can make a bright day feel cooler without telling you the UV level. If you choose an open ferry deck, include that part of the journey in your sun-protection plans.

The National Park Service explains that the time printed on a ferry ticket is for joining security screening, not a reserved sailing. Plan for the possibility that your time outdoors extends beyond the departure you first had in mind.

Check the return hours too

Look at the forecast for the outward trip, the island visit and the journey back. An early start can still turn into a return during the higher-UV part of the day.

Use official park information for ferry, monument and security arrangements. The UV forecast does not show queues, cancellations or entry availability.

Sun protection tips for Statue of Liberty

  • Keep a hat secure in a harbor breeze and bring sunglasses with UV protection.
  • Carry sunscreen where you can reach it during the outing, subject to current security rules.
  • Plan protection for the return ferry as well as the island, especially if you add another stop to the trip.
