A crossing with plenty of pauses

A Brooklyn Bridge walk often takes longer than a straightforward crossing. Views toward the skyline, photographs and busy stretches can keep you on the pedestrian route. Include those pauses when choosing which forecast hours to check.

Wind is about comfort, not UV

The elevated crossing can feel breezier than a nearby street. That does not establish that UV is low. The area forecast cannot measure the shade beneath a tower or how long you will spend in an exposed stretch.

Remember the walk at either end

Your outing may continue through Lower Manhattan or along the Brooklyn waterfront. Read the curve for the whole route, especially if a morning crossing becomes a midday lunch outside. NYC DOT is the source for current bridge access information.

If you stop in DUMBO after crossing, count that as another outdoor part of the trip. A lower reading at the start of the bridge walk may not describe the time you spend beside the waterfront afterward.

Sun protection tips for Brooklyn Bridge

  • Keep a hat secure and use sunglasses on bright days.
  • Bring sun protection before starting the crossing rather than relying on finding shelter halfway.
  • Allow time for the return journey if you plan to cross on foot again.
